Steps to Save a Life
The first thing you must realize is that you have a right NOT to be beaten!
I. IT IS A CRIME - For any person to cause you any physical injury or harm even if that person is a member or former member of your family or household or is in a dating relationship.
II. TELL A POLICE OFFICER
A. If you, your child, any other household member or dating partner has been injured.
B. If you feel you are going to be in danger when the officer leaves your residence or at a later time.
III. YOU HAVE A RIGHT TO:
A. Ask law enforcement to file a criminal complaint against the person committing family/dating violence, sexual assault and/or stalking.
B. A protective order application can be filed to prevent further harm. You cannot be charged a fee by a court in connection with filing, serving or entering a protective order. The Crisis Center assists you in filing the protective order application for free.
IV. A COURT CAN ISSUE AN ORDER THAT:
A. Prohibits the abuser from committing further acts of violence
B. Prohibits the abuser from threatening, harassing or contacting you at home or work, etc.
C. May establish temporary custody of the children
A VIOLATION OF CERTAIN PROVISIONS OF COURT-ORDERED PROTECTION MAY BE A FELONY.
